I cross my Z's with a little line because my seventh grade math teacher (the guy who lived in a houseboat and didn't own a tv and solved equations he made up himself for fun) did so, and I thought he was pretty cool, and that the z's look spiffy.

It became a habit, and I still do it to this day.
